The Hog Trough Dance Tradition

Wedding Photographers the world round are exposed to local traditions and cultural rituals at weddings on a weekly basis. One local tradition that never ceases to amaze is the hog trough dance. The story, as told to me goes that if a younger sibling gets married before an older sibling it's considered bad luck for the newlywed couple. What big brother or sister would want to live with that guilt on their shoulders! So in order to break the bad luck the older sibling must dance in a hog trough at their younger siblings wedding until the hog trough breaks. As these videos attest, it's become more of a "have some fun" at the expense of your brother or sisters expense type of event.

Dig up more dirt on the pig trough tradition at Cultural Traditions, the pig trough discussed and victori which claims that certain stockings should be worn to properly dance in a trough.
Among them was a pair of machine-knitted ivory silk stockings with simple clocked motifs. A little soiled, they were found with two notes attached. One was written in pencil: "These are the pig trough stockings," and one typed on an old pica typewriter: "Because the younger sister married before the older one these stockings were given to the older sister by the groom and she had to dance in a new pig trough. This was the custom in the days of 1829. KG."
